Digital X-Rays: Effective Treatment Starts with An Accurate Diagnosis
The first step to effectively treating problems with your teeth, gums, and mouth is to understand them. Willow Creek Dentistry does this with a range of diagnostic technologies and services. In fact, Drs. Chris Calnon, Scott Koopman, and Molly Hatala have invested in advanced technologies, such as digital X-rays, to support the most accurate diagnoses and the safest, most pleasant experience at our office in Rochester, New York.
What are digital X-rays?
Digital X-rays, or radiographs, produce images of teeth, bones, and soft tissues. Our dentists review these images to analyze areas too small to be seen with the unaided eye. These technologies support accurate and early detection of conditions such as:
Hidden dental decay (between teeth or under restorations)
Bone loss
Infections (abscesses)
Impacted wisdom teeth
Cysts
Tumors (benign and cancerous)
Infected or damaged nerves
Jaw misalignment
Developmental problems in children
How do digital X-rays compare to other X-rays?
“Traditional” radiography uses film to capture images, whereas digital X-rays use special sensors to process images. With digital X-rays, captured images may be viewed immediately on a monitor. Traditional X-ray images take longer because chemical processing is involved. Images rendered with digital radiography are also higher resolution; our dentists can zoom in and adjust them for clearer viewing. Conventional X-rays produce static images whose quality can degrade over time.
Additionally, digital technologies are associated with up to 90% less radiation exposure than traditional methods. They are also a planet-friendly option! No film waste or chemicals are involved in the making of these images.
When do you take X-rays?
X-rays are generally done during routine dental visits (check-ups). They may also be performed in an emergency, such as an intense toothache, to identify the underlying source of your pain.
How often are X-rays performed?
The frequency of your X-rays depends on factors such as your needs, age, and risk factors. During your first visit to our office, full-mouth X-rays may be recommended, depending on when your last series was done. These images of the teeth and jawbone establish baseline insights into your overall oral health, and can last for between three and five years.
Routine bitewing X-rays may be taken every 12 to 24 months for healthy adult patients with no risk factors. These X-rays may be needed more frequently for children and high-risk adults. It’s essential for us to regularly monitor how pediatric patients’ teeth and jaws are developing. Likewise, certain medical conditions or past oral conditions require us to monitor your teeth and other tissues more often to catch and address emerging problems before they cause damage.
