Prevent Cavities, Reverse Early Decay with Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. It is used in many toothpastes and is often found in municipal drinking water systems due to its health benefits. As needed, Drs Chris Calnon, Scott Koopman, and Molly Hatala at Willow Creek Dentistry may recommend fluoride supplementation to patients in the Rochester, New York area.

What are the health benefits of fluoride treatments?

Fluoride is a tremendous ally for dental health! It has been shown to:

  • Prevent cavities by making the surface of the teeth more resistant to decay.
  • Stop decay in its tracks by remineralizing (rebuilding and strengthening) the tooth’s protective enamel covering.
  • Reverse decay when introduced early enough into the disease process.
  • Fight bacteria, in part, by inhibiting the ability of germs from sticking to the teeth.
  • Support healthy development in children by strengthening enamel as teeth form.
  • Provide widespread public health benefits through community-wide water fluoridation.

Why would I need more fluoride?

Our dentists can assess the level of fluoride in your primary drinking water source. We may recommend supplements if you have low fluoride exposure in the water you regularly drink. Additionally, fluoride therapy can be a fundamental preventive measure for pediatric patients’ vulnerable and developing teeth. Patients of all ages who are at high cavity risk can benefit, too. You may be at increased risk of developing cavities due to dry mouth, receding gums, orthodontic treatment, and existing dental work.

How is fluoride therapy done?

Fluoride supplements come in a variety of different forms. We can recommend the appropriate fluoride concentration based on factors such as the patient’s age and needs. More fluoride may be incorporated as prescription drops/liquid supplements or as dietary supplements in tablet form, among other products.

Is fluoride safe?

Fluoride is not only safe, but it is also effective at preventing dental decay, which can have tremendous effects on your oral health and overall health. While excessive intake in children can cause white spots (dental fluorosis) on teeth, there are no scientifically substantiated systemic effects associated with fluoride therapy. Furthermore, as dental professionals, we minimize the risk of excessive intake and fluorosis. As with all treatments at our office, fluoride products are customized to the patient. Such tailored treatments support your safety.

Is fluoride therapy affordable?

Preventive products and treatments are a cost-effective alternative to dental procedures designed to treat decay and to restore damaged teeth. As a preventive service, fluoride therapy is very affordable. In fact, it may be covered in full or in part by your dental insurance plan. Associated out-of-pocket costs, or costs for those without insurance, are a fraction of the cost of a dental filling or other dental work to treat cavities. Protecting your teeth from cavities is consistently easier on the budget than treating existing damage. It’s also easier on you because you avoid the discomfort associated with progressive dental decay!
