General Dentistry – Complete Care For The Whole Family

As a general dentist practice, Willow Creek Dentistry provides complete care for the whole family from our office in Rochester, New York. Our priority is to prevent problems with the teeth, gums, and mouth that could cause pain or damage and require treatment. Another priority is to resolve problems as early and quickly as possible. Most oral problems are preventable and progressive. So, for what cannot be prevented, Drs Chris Calnon, Scott Koopman and Molly Hatala want to identify and resolve issues early before they cause irreversible damage and tooth loss.

Happy patient

How do you prevent problems?

Prevention is a partnership with you. From your first visit, we assess the condition of your mouth. X-rays may be taken, and we will discuss factors that can affect your mouth’s health. These factors include your diet, oral hygiene, and habits. All of this information provides clues into your needs, which are used to develop a preventive plan. We can advise on oral care products to use at home, brushing and flossing techniques, and other ways to keep your mouth healthy. We’ll also schedule your next dental check-up.

Why are check-ups important?

Routine dental check-ups are a key way to stay on top of your oral health as it evolves. Changes in your overall health and life can affect your oral health. By maintaining these visits, at least once every six months, we can address these changes and catch issues with your mouth when they are still minor and before they turn into bigger, serious problems that would require treatment.

Why would I need treatment?

During a visit, we may uncover problems that would require prompt care. These problems include tooth decay and gum disease, the two leading causes of tooth loss. When preventive care fails, or it’s been a while since you last saw a dentist, treatments can resolve the underlying problem and preserve the gums or affected teeth. Treatments for early-stage tooth decay and gum disease might include fillings and a “deep cleaning” (scaling and root planing). Treatments for more advanced tooth decay and gum disease include root canal therapy, extractions, crowns, bridges, and periodontal surgery.

Do oral health problems always cause pain?

No. Problems with the teeth and gums often do not cause any noticeable changes early on, and even advanced damage can be painless. For instance, when the nerve inside a badly decayed tooth dies, it loses the ability to feel pain. You may not feel anything, yet you still need treatment. Until the underlying infection and structural damage are treated, your mouth is vulnerable to greater damage, and the infection may even spread to other parts of your face and body.

For these and other reasons, it is essential to keep regular check-ups at Willow Creek Dentistry. During these visits, Drs. Calnon, Koopman or Hatala may find problems that require immediate attention – issues you didn’t know you had because your mouth looks and feels fine. Without treatment, the problem that could have been reversed with simple changes in your oral care might progress and cause painful damage that cannot be easily repaired.
