What is a mouthguard?
A mouthguard is a removable appliance worn in the mouth to protect teeth, gums, jaws, and other structures against injuries. Willow Creek Dentistry offers several mouthguard options.
- Sports mouthguards: Play sports with confidence. Our sports guards protect your mouth from knocks, falls, and blows during contact and high-risk sports. We recommend mouthguards for amateur or professional sports. An athletic guard prevents broken teeth, dislodged teeth, soft tissue injuries, etc., and saves you from costly repairs and replacements.
- Bruxism mouthguards: Do you grind or clench your teeth when sleeping? Protect your teeth by wearing a customized nightguard. Our nightguard prevents tooth-to-tooth contact, which prevents tooth damage. Our guards also reduce jaw pain, headaches, and other symptoms associated with teeth grinding.
Are there different types of mouthguards?
Yes! Several mouthguards are available on the market, but not all are created equal. Here are mouthguard options you should know:
- Pre-made mouthguards: Generic mouthguards might seem budget-friendly, but they have significant drawbacks. Since they can’t be adjusted for comfort, they often make it difficult to talk or breathe. They are also made from subpar materials that provide limited protection.
- Boil-and-bite mouthguards: They are a step up from generic mouthguards. They are made from a thermoplastic material that softens when placed in hot water. Once you put them in your mouth, you use your tongue and fingers to shape the appliance around your teeth. Boil-and-bite guards are better than stock mouthguards, but they can’t match the longevity and protection of custom mouthguards.
- Custom-fitted mouthguards: They are the best choice for protecting your teeth from sports injuries or nighttime grinding. First, you’ll visit your dentist to have impressions of your teeth made. These guide the custom fabrication of your dental guard. Custom-fitted mouthguards may cost more than ready-made options but offer unmatched strength, reliability, and comfort. Built to last, they can serve you well for years without replacement. Their long-term value often outweighs the initial investment.
