TMJ Treatment For Effective, Lasting Pain And Symptom Relief
Willow Creek Dentistry welcomes the opportunity to provide comprehensive care to our neighbors throughout the Rochester, New York, area. In addition to the standard dental services you might expect from a dentist’s office, Drs. Chris Calnon, Scott Koopman, and Molly Hatala also offer advanced therapy for conditions such as TMJ disorders (TMJDs).
What are TMJDs?
TMJ stands for the “temporomandibular joints.” These joints attach the jawbone to the skull. The oral cavity, tissues, and structures of the face, jaws, head, and neck do not exist in isolation. They are all connected. When one part of this well-oiled machine is not working as it should, it can adversely affect seemingly disparate or distant parts. So, problems with TM joints are associated with a range of symptoms and complications, some of which may seem unrelated to the mouth.
What are the signs that something is wrong?
Signs that you may have a TMJD and could benefit from treatment include:
Frequent headaches or migraines
Jaw locking and stiffness when opening and closing the mouth
Jaw and facial pain
A popping and clicking sound with movement
Painful, difficult chewing
Additionally, there are some potentially surprising effects of TM joint dysfunction. Notably, untreated TMJDs are associated with ear problems, such as persistent earaches and tinnitus. The latter condition is defined by a characteristic ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears. Researchers have proposed that the proximity of the joints to the inner ear is to blame. It’s thought that the hair cells in the cochlea may be damaged. Located within the inner ear, the cochlea converts sound waves into electrical impulses, which the brain then translates into recognizable sounds. Any irritation and inflammation of the TMJs can give rise to cochlear damage and problems with other parts of the inner ear.
Why should I treat TMJDs sooner rather than later?
Given the wide range of side effects and potential complications, treatment can significantly improve your quality of life. It provides effective and lasting relief from persistent pain. Additionally, TMJDs are among those conditions that tend to get worse as time wears on without treatment. You may notice an increase in the frequency or seriousness of your symptoms. What was formerly minor pain that would come and go may turn into chronic pain that interferes with your day-to-day life and ability to perform basic functions (like chewing) without difficulty.
What causes TMJDs?
You may be at risk of developing TMJD due to any stress placed on the joints and their associated ligaments, muscles, and tissues. These stressors could include degenerative conditions like arthritis or even behaviors such as bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). Jaw misalignment or discrepancies in the size of the upper and lower jaws can also cause imbalances. Excessive pressure may be placed on one part of the mouth or be uneven, causing muscle strain and leading to characteristic TMJ pain and other symptoms. Without appropriate treatment, tinnitus and other symptoms of TMJDs only become more frequent and severe.
How do you treat TMJDs?
Treatment varies considerably based on your needs. Orthodontic correction, oral splints, physical therapy, and relaxation techniques are all valid options. These therapies can also be used in combination. With our approach to care, we can help patients become less reliant on pain medications. We eliminate the source of the pain, which supports long-lasting comfort and healthy function.
