A Natural-Looking, Minimally-Invasive Way To Repair Cavities
Willow Creek Dentistry prides itself on working closely with our patients from across the greater Rochester, Gates, Henrietta, Brighton, Spencerport, and Scottsville areas of New York. Working together, we can prevent those diseases that threaten oral health. For instance, decay eats away at tooth structure. Early enamel erosion may be treated with fluoride therapy or changes in how you care for your teeth. When decay causes holes or cavities in the teeth, Drs. Chris Calnon, Scott Koopman, and Molly Hatala may recommend a treatment known at our office as a “resin filling” or a “tooth-colored filling.”
What is a filling?
A “filling” is a type of dental restoration that is used to replace and rebuild tooth structure. This structure may be damaged due to decay, cracks, or other trauma. It is an ideal treatment when more modest tooth structure is lost. Fillings are typically minimally invasive, restoring the form and function of the tooth after diseased or non-functional parts are removed. With good and consistent oral hygiene, fillings can last for many years.
Are there different types of fillings?
Yes. At Willow Creek Dentistry, Drs Calnon, Koopman, and Hatala design and place tooth-colored fillings. This type of filling is made from a metal-free material or dental composite. Formulated with a plastic resin and glass-like particles, dental composite is shade-matched to the rest of the tooth and the neighboring teeth. So, these fillings are a natural and durable way to replicate the appearance and strength of tooth enamel.
How are composite fillings placed?
Treatment involves applying the composite material directly to the tooth. To give your tooth a clean slate, the Doctors remove damaged tissue. The composite is then introduced to the tooth in layers. Each layer is hardened with a special light to support the strongest bond between the filling and tooth. The final touches include slightly adjusting or refining the tooth and polishing it to bring out its natural and attractive luster.
How does treatment feel?
You won’t feel anything as the tooth and the surrounding area are numbed. In fact, you should feel immediate relief from the pain that may accompany your cavity. A local anesthetic quickly resolves that pain, and you won’t experience any sensations as our dentists complete your treatment.
What are the benefits of tooth-colored composite fillings?
In addition to looking like natural teeth, these fillings are:
Strong and built to last as long as you take good care of your teeth.
Hypoallergenic, appropriate for individuals with sensitivities to metals.
Tissue-preserving – Less of the tooth needs to be drilled away to accommodate the filling because the composite is placed in a way that minimizes drilling. We only remove the damaged areas and keep the healthy, remaining tissue intact.
Fast treatment can be completed in one appointment.
There is also no special care for composite fillings. Treat them like your natural teeth, with good brushing and flossing and routine check-ups at Willow Creek Dentistry.
